Freedom From the Bondage of Sin

To be free meant a lot to us because we want to do what we want, and to go where we want without restraints. What is freedom?

  • Freedom is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint
Are we free or still in bondage?  What's keeping us in bondage?  There are so many things in our Christian life that are still keeping us in bondage.  They are the sins that come with our old nature when we still didn't know and accepted Christ as our Lord and Savior. Examples are: lying, stealing, bitterness, anger, pride, and lust. The following verses tell us what's keeping us bondage and what to do with them.

Ephesians 4:22-32
"That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil. Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."
Galatians 5:19-21 "The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God."
If we have been set free already from these sinful acts, we shouldn't be putting the chains back on.  We are giving back ourselves to the devil as his prisoners if we keep putting the chains back on.
We have been freed already by Christ.  And to be truly free is to put off the old man and put on the new one, and then gradually be transformed into Christ's likeness. The evidence of being freed is by the fruits of the Spirit in our lives.
Galatians 5:22-23 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."
2 Corinthians 3:17&18 “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”
